Council announced the installation of new outdoor fitness equipment at James Meehan Reserve is now open for use, in time for the weekend.
This initiative was shaped by extensive community input during Council’s Let’s Play!, Open Space and Outdoor Recreation Strategy (2022). The community expressed strong interest in accessible outdoor fitness options, and last year Council sought feedback on preferred locations and equipment types, resulting in valuable suggestions.
The equipment is located in a shaded area of the Reserve, conveniently near the children’s playground, with additional trees to be planted to further enhance shade in this vicinity.
The new facilities include a stretching and warm-up zone, step up boxes, sit-up bench, upper strength pod for chest press and pull-downs, plus a multi-station with leg raise, body dip, gorilla bars, roman rings and pull-up bar. These features cater to a wide range of abilities, age groups, and fitness levels.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the new addition is a fantastic asset for the community.
“Health and fitness are essential for the wellbeing of our community, and this equipment gives everyone the opportunity to exercise for free.
“Positioning the equipment in the southern section of James Meehan Reserve means participants can work out in a shaded area, while families can keep an eye on their children and stay active at the same time.
“We’re proud to deliver projects that can make a real difference in people’s lives and encourage everyone to make the most of these fantastic new facilities,” Mayor Heins said.
This project was fully funded through the Developer Contributions Plan.
