St Augustine’s College provides a rich and balanced education that extends beyond academic achievement. Its vibrant creative and performing arts program plays a vital role in shaping confident learners, supporting them to discover and develop their unique talents.
Nurturing the Whole Student
At St Augustine’s College, your son is encouraged to explore his passions and talents. Celebrating the importance of music, drama, and visual arts assists your son in finding his innate creativity and imagination, while developing communication skills that serve him well in all aspects of life. The College is proud of its Augustinian graduates who progress to prestigious institutions such as National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the Conservatorium of Music, and build successful careers as artists, designers, and authors. However, all students benefit from its strong creative and performing arts program.
A Culture of Music
Music is a vital part of a holistic education and nurtures emotional intelligence. Beginning in Year 5, every student is offered the chance to learn an instrument as part of the curriculum. To complement this, the College offers a Private Music Tuition Program with instruction available on many instruments. Its music enrichment program, IGNITE, also challenges and extends exceptional music students to accelerate their performance and creative skills in their chosen instrument or voice. This early exposure builds musical literacy, discipline, and an appreciation for the artistic talents of others. The College’s co-curricular music program spans Years 5 to 12 and includes concert bands, choirs, and ensembles, with student performances playing a key part at liturgies and community events.
Developing Student Voice in Drama
Drama fosters empathy, leadership and resilience, skills that are invaluable on and off the stage. The College’s Drama program offers your son the opportunity to audition for roles in both Middle and Senior School productions. Students may also be involved in stage crew and tech crew to gain skills in stage management, direction, costume, sound, and lighting operation. Theatresports is a popular co-curricular offering that develops improvisation skills and teamwork. The College’s teams from Years 5 to 12 regularly feature in state and regional finals. Sydney Eisteddfod competitions provide additional opportunities for students to compete at state level in dramatic monologue, Shakespearean drama, verse and prose speaking.
Showcasing Artistic Achievements
Regular art exhibitions are a highlight on the College calendar, showcasing the depth of creativity that finds personal expression in the classroom. This forms an important part of supporting boys in the arts long before their final year at school, and the results show. In 2024 HSC results, St Augustine’s College students were recognised among the best in NSW, with 25 Showcase nominations for exemplary work in Drama, Design and Technology, Music and Visual Arts. The College ranked third in the State for Design and Technology, 94% of all Drama results were in the top two bands, and student William Rogers received an ARTEXPRESS nomination for his series of three self-portrait paintings.
College Philosophy
“We see the arts as essential to forming young people who are confident, curious, and ready to contribute to the world,” says Principal Jonathan Byrne.
“The diversity of our student body is our strength. In the words of our patron Saint Augustine, ‘In an orchestra there are many different instruments. But all are tuned so carefully and played in harmony that the audience only hears one melody. This must be our ideal: to be one orchestra for the Lord.’
As the HSC exams approach, the College celebrates its senior students, from their academic leadership to artistic excellence, and wishes the Class of 2025 the very best.
