Barrenjoey Montessori: A Letter to the Future

As part of Barrenjoey Montessori School’s 40-year celebration, the school community and Principal Melissa Chandler collectively wrote a letter for a special time capsule, a message to be opened by the students of 2065.

The entire Avalon BMS community came together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this thriving community school. Part of the celebration included a time capsule that captures the heart and spirit of BMS today, with contributions from all the classes, staff, directors and students.

Together, they buried the capsule on school grounds, knowing that in forty years, future generations will uncover it and rediscover the warmth, curiosity, and community that have always defined Barrenjoey Montessori School.

Dear Future Barrenjoey Montessori School Community,

Barrenjoey Montessori School has always been more than a school. It is a place where children, families, and educators come together to learn, grow, and belong. Set between the bush and the ocean, our environment is calm, beautiful and purposeful. A place where curiosity is nurtured, independence celebrated, and each child seen for who they truly are.

You may already know what makes BMS special, the authenticity of its Montessori practice and principles that have guided every decision and change.

BMS is also a community. Many families and educators moved or stayed because we wanted to belong to a place where children grow with independence, respect, and joy.

This is a place of laughter, focus, and pride, where colleagues collaborate with trust, friendships run deep, and children learn not just how to learn, but to love to learn.

Families know one another. This community is textured with friendships, shared meals, play on the grass, after-school time on the dunes, working bees that become picnics, and moments where we show up for each other.

Meal Angels arrive when babies are born or families need help. Continent Fair Days bring everyone together in joy, classroom visits to share stories, and graduation ceremonies filled with pride. These moments root this place deeply in the hearts of those who belong.

Many of us were drawn here by a belief in Montessori, a love of learning that begins early and lasts a lifetime. Each child is seen as a whole person, their strengths nurtured, and challenges met with patience
and compassion.

Our educators are extraordinary. Their care, intentionality, and respect set the tone. They create spaces that invite exploration and lessons that inspire curiosity and joy. They know children deeply, and parents and educators walk alongside each other with warmth and integrity.

Watching children thrive affirms this is a special place. There is magic in seeing a child who cannot wait to go to school. That is Barrenjoey Montessori School.
