100 Years of Growing Girls Into Their Brilliance
Prof Ann Brewer, Dean of Professional Practice and Strategic Projects.
For a hundred years, Queenwood has equipped girls to know themselves, connect with others, and explore big ideas with curiosity and empathy. As we celebrate our Centenary in 2025, sunshine — which illuminates, nurtures and energises — feels fitting.
Per Aspera ad Astra — through struggles to the stars — reminds us brilliance is born in challenge. Queenwood provides the light to help students grow and shine.
InvestHER is one example: a financial education initiative launched for Year 8. Using Banqer, an online simulation, girls learn budgeting, saving, investing and decision-making, alongside an RBA seminar to understand the broader economy.
This year, after visiting Unity Grammar, the girls welcomed Unity Grammar students back to Queenwood for a joint day of financial concepts, collaborative challenges and shared perspectives. Gemma, Year 10: “We built solar powered cars, miniature terrariums and learnt financial literacy… then pivoted to discussions about life after school and university.”
Queenwood welcomed back alumna Vanessa Li (Class of 2017), now an Economic Analyst at the RBA, to speak with Year 8. Her message: girls can and should see themselves as confident, capable leaders. Katherine Bennell-Pegg, the first to train and qualify as an international astronaut under the Australian flag, is another Queenwood alumna reaching for the stars.
Centenary highlights include the premiere of “A School of Her Own: The Queenwood Story,” and the launch of “Queenwood’s Looking to the Horizon: 100 Years of Girls’ Education,” by Erica McWilliam and Mark Cryle.
As we look to the next century, we honour those who led with light and commit to being a source of it for those to come.
