When “falling over” turns into “having a fall.”
We’ve all tripped before, over a step, the edge of a rug, or just our own feet. No biggy. But somewhere along the line, something changes. You’re not just falling over anymore… you’re having a fall.
As Australian comedian Carl Barron hilariously points out: “You don’t fall over when you’re older, you have a fall. You never hear a kid say, ‘I had a fall.’ It’s always, ‘I stacked it!’” It’s funny because it’s true, but behind the laugh, there’s something serious.
For older adults, a seemingly minor fall can lead to major consequences: broken bones, hospital time, months of rehab. And usually, the fall itself is just a symptom of what’s really going on.
“People often think a fall is just bad luck,” says Andrew Daubney from Rebound Health, “but more often than not, it’s the result of declining bone strength and balance; things that can be tested, tracked, and improved.”
That’s exactly where Rebound Health’s Onero™ program comes in. Developed from clinical research, Onero™ is a safe, effective, and scientifically supported exercise program designed for people with low bone density or osteoporosis. It focuses on building strength, improving balance, and reducing the risk of falls and fractures, while also increasing overall confidence and mobility.
“It’s not about wrapping people in cotton wool,” Andrew explains. “It’s about getting them moving, doing the right kind of exercise, in a safe and structured way, to make bones stronger and reduce fall risk.”
Unlike many generic fitness routines, the Onero™ program is specifically tailored to stimulate bone growth and improve muscular function. It includes high-impact, weight-bearing movements that are clinically proven to stimulate bone cells. And while that might sound daunting, especially for someone who has already experienced a fall or feels nervous about exercising, it’s carefully supervised by trained professionals who adapt the program to each individual’s needs and ability.

The first steps? Finding out where your bones stand today. If you haven’t had your bone density checked, it’s worth raising with your GP. A quick and non-invasive DEXA scan can measure your bone density and give you a clear baseline, especially important if you’re over 50, postmenopausal, or have a family history of osteoporosis or fractures.
“And if the scan does show low bone density?” says Andrew. “That’s not the end of the road. It’s actually the start of something really hopeful. With programs like Onero™, we’re seeing people not only maintain but increase their bone density, even after a fall or fracture.”
The key is understanding that not all movement helps. Walking is great for general health, but it’s not enough to build bone strength. That requires targeted, weight-loaded exercise done under proper guidance.
“Most people are surprised to learn that you can actually increase bone mass with the right training. The body responds, in your 60s, 70s, or beyond.”
And the benefits go well beyond the bones. People in the program often report feeling more stable on their feet, less anxious about everyday movement, and more motivated to stay active in other parts of life — keeping up with grandchildren, walking the dog, going on holidays, or simply getting out of bed without worrying about falling.
So if you or someone you love is starting to feel a little more “have a fall” than “falling over,” it might be time to start a conversation. Whether it begins with a check-up, a scan, or a chat with the team at Rebound Health, taking that first step could make all the difference.
