At St Augustine’s College, education is about nurturing students on their educational journey so that by graduation, they are ready to take on the world with confidence and curiosity. Boys in Years 5 to 12 strive for academic excellence while gaining experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
Encouraging Potential Through Adventure
Real learning happens when students move outside their comfort zones and explore new horizons. St Augustine’s College offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities and programs designed to challenge and inspire its students. Its sport program includes AFL, basketball, cricket, football, mountain biking, rowing, rugby, tennis, touch football, and water polo. Co-curricular options include art, chess, coding, debating, drama, Duke of Edinburgh, music, and writing. During Term 1, the College’s top mountain bike (MTB) riders travelled to the annual Australian MTB Interschools competition, taking on some of Thredbo’s most challenging and exciting trails. The riders secured multiple podium finishes both individually and as a team.
Educational opportunities also extend globally and outside of term time, with groups of students heading overseas during the most recent school holidays.
Language Students Head to China
The trip to China was facilitated by the College’s Languages department and provided students with an immersive cultural experience that broadened perspectives and deepened their understanding of the world. Visiting the Confucian Temple in Jianshui, participating in classes and exchange activities with Chinese schools, seeing traditional Hani ethnic dances, and tasting local delicacies enriched knowledge and instilled a sense of global citizenship that is a valued part of an Augustinian education. Other highlights for students and staff included exploring historical landmarks like the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, and visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Football Players Build Team Spirit and Global Connections
This tour provided football players the opportunity to compete in tournaments and forge friendships with peers around the world, blending football, culture, and personal development. Highlights included attending Burnley vs Norwich and Manchester City vs Crystal Palace matches, training sessions at Manchester City’s and Benfica’s top facilities, and exploring iconic stadiums Anfield and the Santiago Bernabéu. Students gained insights into professional football through elite coaching, but the benefits extend beyond sport, with the lessons from these adventures shaping College students into well-rounded individuals ready to tackle life’s challenges. Staff witnessed the growth of students as they built character, teamwork, and resilience, and learned the value of hard work and discipline both on and off the pitch.
Spreading Social Justice and Community Values
The College’s holistic education includes its SEA (Service Education Awareness) Program, a social justice initiative that helps students grow into compassionate, socially aware individuals who are prepared to make a positive impact in the world. Since its inception in 2007, the program has involved over 300 students in nearly 20 immersions across six countries. Last year, students travelled to Central Australia to participate in hands-on service activities and deeply engage with First Nations people, gaining insight and appreciation for the oldest living cultures in the world. Later this year, the SEA Program will include an immersion in Fiji.
