John Colet: Different for the Better

Stillness. Truthfulness. Courage. Service. Respect.

Surrounded by the calming bushland of Belrose, John Colet is education done differently. As a standalone primary school for children aged 5-12, it has a 40-year history specialising in enriching the formative years of childhood. At John Colet, they believe in building character, attention and values as the basis for academic excellence. Essentially, good students start as good people. So, what's different about John Colet?

Respect Starts at the School Gate

Each morning, students are greeted with a handshake from their Headmaster, building a personal connection between students and staff that reinforces respect both ways.

Continuity of Care

Unlike traditional schools where students change teachers every year, John Colet makes the most of pre-established trust and developed learning environments, ensuring continuity of care by keeping students with the same teachers for three years in K-2, two years from Year 3-4, and two years from Year 5-6.

Shakespeare

Not just any primary school, John Colet is thoughtfully unique. Here, your child can expect to learn Shakespeare from a young age, developing critical skills in English literature and theatre, with opportunities to perform professionally at Glen Street Theatre.

Unique Curriculum

With a focus on producing a well-rounded education, John Colet integrates Sanskrit, Choral singing, and Philosophy into weekly classes, alongside a vast repertoire of extracurricular swimming, music, chess, debating, eisteddfods and sport. In third class to sixth class, students even submit a major work to the Gallipolli Art Prize. Balancing classical art education with modern skills, coding and keyboard skills are also prioritised.

"Classical arts, fine arts. Children rise to that," says Headmaster Julian Wilcock, explaining the rationale of getting kids started in high arts education early on.

Mindfulness Program

Ten to twelve times a day, students are given time to pause before and after each lesson. This simple habit provides a solid foundation for emotional regulation, teaching kids to set goals, reflect on what they have learned, and build level-headed character right from the start.

Multicultural Environment

There's no need to worry about the effect of the insular peninsula when you send your child here. As a co-ed, multi-faith K-6 school, John Colet attracts students from diverse backgrounds, exposing your child to a variety of cultures, beliefs and experiences.

On-site Chef

Busy parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing there's no need for the morning lunchbox-packing scramble - at John Colet, kids don't have to choose from unhealthy packaged food at the canteen; instead, they can all sit down together and enjoy a hot meal prepared by their on-site chef. All food is completely vegetarian, using ingredients from the school garden tended by the students themselves.

Beloved by Parents

With beaming smiles, mums and dads had nothing but kind words to describe their experiences.

"You couldn't find a better school."

"I would encourage anyone who's looking at different options for their children to come to John Colet."

"It's the greatest gift you could possibly give to a child."

"There's no better school like it."

With a current push for students going into grade 3, 4, 5 or 6, now is the perfect time to enrol, and secure a bright future for your child.
