Moving schools used to be a major ordeal. Not anymore. Education has become far more fluid, with change now seen as a healthy part of the learning journey. If your child’s current school isn’t bringing out their best, there’s no reason to feel locked in. More families than ever are embracing new environments that better align with their children’s needs, personalities, and potential.
While mainstream education in Sydney is exceptional, it doesn’t suit everyone. That’s why schools like John Colet in Belrose play such an important role. This independent primary school offers education from Kindy to Year 6, combining academic excellence with a distinctive focus on mindfulness, values, and character. Surrounded by peaceful bushland, John Colet nurtures confident, thoughtful, young people
who carry truthfulness, courage, and compassion into the wider world.
For many families that have made the move, that difference is immediately noticeable.
“When our son was asked ‘Which do you like better, your old school or your new one?’ he said, ‘My new one. I learn more and everyone listens and behaves themselves,’” says Dr Zoe Knights, whose son joined in Year Four. “That kind of sums up our feelings about John Colet too.”
For Zoe, stability and respect were key factors in the move.
“We felt our son’s learning had been impeded by constant changes in teaching staff. At John Colet, the teachers are there every day. They engage calmly and respectfully, while maintaining structure and routine. That earns real respect from the students.”
She also proudly highlights the school’s inclusive community.
“It’s very diverse, both culturally and in terms of interests, which really promotes inclusiveness; there are no
cliques. Much to our surprise, he’s also loved Shakespeare. We’d never seen him interested in performing arts, but his confidence has soared through their productions.”

For Dr Samantha McLean, whose son joined in Year Five this year, the move was about finding a place that aligned with her family’s values.
“We wanted a more challenging and fulfilling education in a place of kindness, inclusivity, and natural beauty. Its mindful and ethical foundation, and humble approach to excellence were exactly what we were looking for,” says Samantha.
Samantha was impressed with how her son's transition was well-supported.
“It was tough at first because he missed his friends, but he was welcomed straight away. He quickly connected through debating and choir and absolutely loved the depth of learning.”
What impressed her most is the balance between academic challenge and emotional wellbeing.
“The school sets high expectations, then supports the children to meet them. The teachers really understand each child, encouraging self-directed learning and resilience. Mindfulness helps them
reset and refocus, an invaluable life skill.”
Both Mums agree the change was an excellent decision for their family.
“Our son is more confident, more curious, and happier than ever,” says Samantha. “Sometimes he’s even sad when the weekend arrives; he just wants to be at school.”
