Every new parent expects sleepless nights. Few expect overwhelming anxiety, persistent sadness or the feeling that they're failing when they're meant to be most fulfilled. Perinatal depression and anxiety affect many Australian families, yet countless parents suffer in silence. Gidget Foundation Australia is working to ensure new parents never feel alone.
After beloved friend and mother Gidget tragically died by suicide while experiencing postnatal depression, those close to her formed the Gidget Foundation. Recently, they celebrated 25 years of transforming awareness into action. Today, the Foundation provides free psychological support, emotional wellbeing programs and specialist care to expectant and new parents across Australia.
The hardest step is recognising that what they're feeling isn't something to simply "push through". Seeking help isn't a sign of weakness; it's one of the strongest things a parent can do, both for themselves and for their child.
"We are so incredibly proud of what has been created in Gidget's honour. When the founding committee first came together, we never anticipated that we would still be doing that same thing and so much more 25 years later. Gidget's life and legacy have inspired something far greater than we could have ever imagined," says founder Libby Bowditch, OAM.
The Foundation's work extends far beyond counselling. Through community education, healthcare partnerships and advocacy, Gidget Foundation Australia is breaking down the stigma surrounding perinatal mental illness and encouraging earlier intervention.
Support is available for mothers, fathers, partners and adoptive parents. Whether someone is experiencing anxiety during pregnancy, postnatal depression, birth trauma or the emotional challenges of new parenthood, specialised help is available from clinicians who understand this life stage.
With the right support, parents can regain confidence, reconnect with loved ones and enjoy the moments that once felt out of reach.
By opening conversations, challenging stigma and making professional support easier to access, Gidget Foundation Australia is ensuring families can begin their parenting journey with hope, connection and the knowledge that help is within reach.
"I want every new and expectant parent to know that you are not alone and that support services are available. Asking for help can be scary but it will be the most courageous thing you can do," encourages Libby.
If you or someone you know is finding it difficult, support is available. The bravest first step is simply asking for it.
