Beach patrols back for 2026/27, including Shelly Beach in peak summer
The red and yellow flags are going back up. Council lifeguards return to beaches along the coast this Saturday 26 September, and for the first time, Shelly Beach will be patrolled through the busiest weeks of the summer holidays.
Back Between the Flags
Freshwater got a head start, with lifeguards on patrol since Saturday 29 August. The rest of the seasonal beaches follow this weekend, while Manly and Dee Why stay patrolled all year round.
Mayor Sue Heins said Council lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers play a vital role in keeping the community safe.
"The Northern Beaches is home to some of Australia's most iconic beaches and every year millions of people come here to enjoy our incredible coastline," Mayor Heins said.
"As we welcome the start of another beach season, I encourage everyone to swim between the red and yellow flags, follow lifeguard advice and look out for one another when visiting our beaches."
Shelly's Summer Shift
Shelly Beach will be patrolled from Monday 21 December to Sunday 31 January 2027, funded through the special rate variation. It's a first for the Beaches, and it lands right when the sheltered cove is at its most crowded.
"The new patrol at Shelly Beach over the peak holiday period is fantastic news for our community and visitors," Mayor Heins said.
Eyes in the Sky
Lifeguards will again work alongside Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Government's Shark Management Program, with drones keeping watch from above to spot hazards before they become problems.

Play It Safe
Swim between the flags, read the signs, keep an eye on changing conditions and follow directions from patrol staff. Lifeguards are always ready to respond, but the best rescue is the one that never has to happen.
