He wrote the anthem for a generation of kids from the suburbs. Now Dave Warner is turning it into theatre, and the Beaches gets the first look.
Glen Street Theatre, Radio Northern Beaches and Manly Theatre Company have joined forces to present a staged reading of In Search of the Suburban Boy, a new work by acclaimed Australian author, musician and playwright Dave Warner. Two nights only at Glen Street Theatre, Belrose, on Tuesday 24 November and Wednesday 25 November.
Back to the Suburbs
Warner’s song Suburban Boy became an anthem for a generation. In In Search of the Suburban Boy, he returns to the themes that made it stick: identity, aspiration, belonging and what it means to grow up in suburban Australia.
This is a staged reading, which means you’re seeing the work while it’s still taking shape. It’s a rare chance to sit in on the creative process and back new Australian theatre at the moment it matters most.
Three’s Company
The project brings together three local organisations with a shared belief: local artists deserve the chance to create, collaborate and present new stories close to home.
Glen Street Theatre, owned and operated by Northern Beaches Council, brings the professional venue and audience reach. Manly Theatre Company brings decades of commitment to community theatre and creative development. Together they give emerging and established artists a proper platform.
Tune In Later
Can’t make it on the night? Radio Northern Beaches will record the reading for later broadcast, taking Warner’s work well beyond the theatre walls.
“This unique collaboration demonstrates the strength of the Northern Beaches creative sector and how local artists, community organisations and local government can work together,” said Mayor Heins.
“Council’s ongoing support of Glen Street Theatre ensures our community has access to the professional infrastructure needed for this type of creative development and ensures new work can be developed, celebrated and shared within the community where it was created.”
