"Academically, the Pause fosters focus and effective learning. Socially, it enhances a sense of connectedness and compassion. And internally, it incites a certain inner strength and courage to deal with life's challenges," says Headmaster Julian Wilcock.

For many families, the strategy has quickly become a household habit.

"Yes, I have seen my children pause at home! They use it when they're frustrated practising piano, losing a board game, or feeling anxious and can't sleep," says Andrea Glanville, parent and Parents & Friends (P&F) Association member.

For others, the Pause even helps them on their way to sporting greatness.

"The emphasis John Colet School places on emotional regulation, resilience, and thoughtful decision-making has had a noticeable impact. Sophie seems more self-aware, better able to manage challenging situations, and more willing to reflect before reacting. Those skills have been valuable not only at school but also at home, in sport, and in everyday life.

"A great example was before one of her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions. She was feeling nervous before stepping onto the mat, so she took a moment to Pause, focus on her breathing, and collect her thoughts before competing. It was really nice to see her use something she had learnt at school in a completely different setting, and it helped her approach the competition feeling calmer and more confident," shares Dr Bree Gregory, parent and P&F member.

While the Pause is one example, it reflects a broader philosophy that learning isn't confined to academics. The school aims to nurture qualities such as compassion, gratitude, responsibility and service, encouraging children to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves.

PARENTS & FRIENDS

That sense of belonging extends beyond the students. Through the Parents & Friends Association, families come together for events of all kinds. Children see first-hand what it means to contribute, volunteer and support others, reinforcing the idea that community is an extension of family.

"The P&F helps connect the children and school to the families at home. Not only is it a fundraising body but we also take great joy in bringing both the school and family communities together for wonderful events. Our meetings are fun and involved and the children love seeing their parents showing the same values as the school," says Amanda, JCS P&F President.

"The P&F hold fun events for families to get together and make memories on school grounds. The movie nights, trivia nights, Lunar New Year and Diwali bring people together in a relaxed atmosphere. Raising funds through Walkathon and Gala Nights engage the whole school community to build something awesome for future students, and the kids also love taking part as much as they can," shares Lillian Cheung, parent and P&F member.

HOMEWARD BOUND

Whether families are new to the school or returning decades later, many describe the same feeling: that John Colet is more than a place of learning. It's a community where children are encouraged to become thoughtful, compassionate people, and where the lessons learnt in the classroom continue long after the school day ends.

"We trusted John Colet with our two eldest children because we wanted more than great academics, and that is what we got. The teachers genuinely know and care about every child, the learning support was excellent, and the values the school instilled have carried through. Both are thriving in high school now, which is why our younger children are at JCS also," says Matthew and Tammy Heap, returning parents.
