Northern Beaches Council is delighted to announce it was awarded the Communications and Engagement Award in the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards for its Bin It Right campaign. Competition was fierce, with 12 other finalists from councils and organisations across NSW in the running.
The accolade celebrates Council’s commitment to environmental leadership and its success in inspiring positive recycling behaviour across the community.
Launched in late 2024, the Bin It Right campaign was designed to drive behavioural change among residents. Recognising that confusion often leads to recycling mistakes, the highly visual campaign was grounded in behavioural science and provided simple guidance to make using bins easier.
The campaign was commended for its strong creative execution, innovative messaging for behavioural change and the broad range of communication platforms embraced, ensuring wide exposure.
Mayor Sue Heins said this award is acknowledgement of Council’s determination to improve waste practices on the Northern Beaches.
“We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition from Keep Australia Beautiful NSW for our Bin It Right campaign. This award is a testament to the hard work of our staff, community partners and every resident who has embraced smarter waste habits.
“Together, we are building a cleaner, greener Northern Beaches for future generations. We’re committed to building on this success and continuing to work with our community to further reduce waste and protect our local environment.”
The introduction of dedicated fishing tackle bins across the Northern Beaches, a Council initiative in partnership with OzFish, was also Highly Commended in the Litter Prevention category of the awards.
Congratulations also to other local entities for their award wins: Surfrider Foundation Northern Beaches for its ‘Adopt A Beach’ program and Wheeler Heights Public School as runners up in the Young Legends Award for its ‘Project Less to Landfill, Wheeler Heights Sustainability Program’. Both programs were recipients of Council’s environment grants.
