Parliament of NSW | The Dismissal

Tuesday 11 November, 5:30pm – 6:45pm

Join Parliament of NSW for a state versus federal constitutional comparison and a uniquely NSW perspective on the 1975 dismissal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.

It’s now 50 years since the dismissal of Gough Whitlam, a significant event in Australia’s political history. But NSW also had its own constitutional crisis when Premier Jack Lang was dismissed in 1932. How does this event compare to the 1975 dismissal? What are the constitutional differences between NSW and the Commonwealth when it comes to Appropriation Bills and the powers of the Senate and Legislative Council?

Hear from our panel of experts including Professor Rodney Smith, Professor of Australian Politics at the University of Sydney and Dr Lynsey Blayden, University of Sydney Law School as they discuss the Dismissal 50 years on.

Jubilee Room, NSW Parliament, 6 Macquarie St Sydney OR via online livestream
