This January, Andre was attacked by a shark at Manly Beach. Two brave surfers, Ash and Eduardo, put themselves in danger to come towards him and the shark, helping the fellow surfer back to shore. Dayan used his legrope as a tourniquet on Andre's right leg to prevent further blood loss. Sarah performed CPR to help keep his heart pumping the blood he had left through his body. Brian ensured blood was delivered to Andre in miraculous time. Police helped get Andre to hospital as quickly as possible, where the ICU team immediately began working their expertise, successfully amputating Andre's lower right leg. These heroes, along with so many unnamed helpers on the beach and at their workplaces that night, helped Andre survive.

Weeks later, Andre was finally taken off life support and continued to breathe on his own, officially becoming a shark attack survivor. He stayed in hospital with his family for the following months, regaining his basic health.

The Fundraiser

All ticket sales fund Andre's much-needed rehabilitation, as extensive physical therapy is the only way he will be able to get his knee functioning well enough to use a prosthetic leg. The progress Andre has made since leaving hospital has been remarkable, thanks to persistent and rigorous physiotherapy funded by the generosity and compassion of the Australian public. These donations will hopefully fund more physio sessions that are making all the difference.

What can we all do to stay safe with the rising number of shark attacks?

1. Always ensure you go into the water with others around so that, if the unthinkable were to happen, help is nearby.
2. Take a short course in tourniquet application and CPR training.
3. When shopping for fish, look for ASC or MSC-certified labels to ensure you're not supporting destructive fishing practices that disrupt the ecosystem and force more sharks to seek humans as a food source.
