Sunset Diner: Good Times

Bright, bold, and full of personality, Sunset Diner brings a splash of Palm Springs cool to Avalon Village. With pastel-pink booths, neon pops, and a menu that keeps locals coming back, it’s become part of the village rhythm. Created by local chef and restaurateur Ben Varela, it’s all about great food, easy company, and that unmistakable Northern Beaches energy, where the fries are hot, the drinks are cold, and the vibe is always good.

There’s something instantly uplifting about Sunset Diner. Maybe it’s the colour, maybe it’s the people, or maybe it’s that feeling of knowing exactly what you’re in for, good food, a laid-back crowd, and
a little fun on the side.

For Founder Ben Varela, the idea was simple: create a place that brings people together over great food, minus the fuss. After years working in some of Sydney’s best-known kitchens, Ben turned his focus closer to home, building something that feels as relaxed as Avalon itself. The result? A diner that locals claim as their own.

The menu celebrates familiar favourites, done really well. The Burger and the crispy chicken burger are the headline act, the Sunset Cheeseburger and Spicy Fried Chicken Burger are local legends, but you’ll also find crisp salads, loaded fries, and lighter options for those in the mood for something fresh. Everything is made to order using quality local produce, paired perfectly with a thickshake, icy beer, or something stronger as the sun dips low.

Families, surfers, and groups of friends drift in throughout the day. There’s always music playing, kids laughing, and that hum of conversation that tells you you’re somewhere people actually want to be. It’s this mix of good food with good service and an easy atmosphere that’s cemented Sunset Diner as an Avalon favourite.

It’s casual dining done right, with a nod to nostalgia and a whole lot of heart.

Find Sunset Diner in the heart of Avalon Village and settle in for sunshine on a plate. Open seven days for lunch and dinner, no reservations, just good times.
