Northern Beaches Transport Review Released After Two-Year Push

After two years of sustained pressure from Member for Manly James Griffin MP, the NSW Government has released the Northern Beaches Internal Road Network Review, confirming what locals have long known: the Spit Bridge and Military Road corridor remains a critical chokepoint, and action is overdue.

The review was commissioned following the cancellation of the Beaches Link Tunnel in September 2023, with Mr Griffin and the NSW Opposition successfully lobbying for an independent assessment of alternative solutions to reduce congestion and improve travel times across the region.

Since then, Mr Griffin has repeatedly pressed the Government to release its findings, lodging Questions on Notice, delivering Private Members' Statements, writing directly to the Transport Minister and introducing a Notice of Motion in NSW Parliament calling for the review's urgent release.

"My focus will be working constructively with my Northern Beaches colleagues to see this delivered — because a review is one thing; funding is another. What matters now is project specifics, funding, timelines and delivery, and I will be holding the Government to account every step of the way," Mr Griffin said.

The review identifies opportunities including improved bus reliability, upgraded intersections, better traffic flow on key corridors, reduced rat-running through local streets and targeted safety improvements. Transport for NSW has now commenced community consultation, inviting residents to have their say on potential solutions.

Mr Griffin said the release marks an important first step, but made clear the fight is far from over. "The Minns Labor Government has made no secret that they've spent the proposed Beaches Link Tunnel funding on transport projects in Western Sydney. It's time for them to respect the calls of all Northern Beaches MPs and deliver some funding for Northern Beaches transport projects."
