Jati was founded by Zaid Afiff, who had a passion for his home country, Indonesia, and wanted to showcase its excellence. “Dad started manufacturing, importing, and assembling furniture on weekends out of his garage. Then he rented a small warehouse in Richmond (Melbourne). When he could afford to advertise, The Age wrote about him, and then people started knocking. That’s when he moved out of teaching,” says Zaid’s son Adam, who now leads the business into its second generation.

Jati’s signature is its teak, sourced from sustainable plantations in the dry hills of Java, Indonesia. Teak's natural oils make it highly resistant to weather, decay, and pests, and when paired with the skills of Javanese craftspeople, the result is heirloom-quality outdoor furniture.

“Indonesia has always had a tradition of teak craftsmanship, and Dad discovered a gap in Australia," explains Adam. "The market was flooded with low-quality imports or high-end pieces bearing European or American labels, both of which were costly. He saw an opportunity to offer high-quality, affordable teak furniture by leveraging his connections in Indonesia."
