LocalKind Steps Up Support

Since 1977, LocalKind has been a lifeline on the Northern Beaches, providing food, clothing and connection to people doing it tough. Now, with the addition of new Community Support Workers and Case Managers, the organisation is expanding its ability to walk alongside locals facing some of life’s hardest challenges including financial stress, housing insecurity, domestic violence, mental health struggles and isolation.

When Cynthia arrived at LocalKind, she had endured unimaginable trauma. She was given safety, clothing, food and compassion. Thanks to the new program, the team could go further. Case Managers uncovered deeper needs such as homelessness, lack of identification and no access to income support, and helped Cynthia take practical steps forward. From securing temporary accommodation and transport, to setting up a bank account and Centrelink payments, LocalKind became the bridge to stability and hope.

With welcoming drop-in centres in Manly and Brookvale, LocalKind has long been known for its free food, material aid and trusted partnerships. Now, professional Community Support Workers are ensuring every visitor receives targeted, trauma-informed and person-centred care.

“Demand for our services has grown by more than 60% in the past year, with almost 7,000 visits to our drop-ins,” says Craig Stevens, CEO of LocalKind. “This program means we can do more than meet immediate needs, we can help people set goals, navigate complex systems and take steps towards safety, stability and independence.”

Working hand in hand with more than 20 partners including Lifeline, Odyssey House, Mentoring Men, Centrelink and OzHarvest, LocalKind is building stronger pathways to accommodation, employment and long-term wellbeing.

“This initiative is about giving people dignity and a genuine chance to move forward,” adds Daniel Peterson, Head of Community Services. “We are seeing rising disadvantage on the Beaches, and we are determined to respond with practical solutions that work.”
