NARRABEEN LAGOON LOOP

8.4km | Beginner | Flat the whole way round.

If you're teaching the kids, or just want a ride with nothing to think about, this is the one. Completed in 2015, the loop gives walkers, joggers and riders an easy water's edge route the whole way around. It gets busy in the warmer months, so time your ride to dodge the crowd or use it to teach the little ones some riding etiquette. Tempting as it is to race the flat, stop at Jamieson Park, Deep Creek Reserve, Bilarong Playground and Middle Creek Reserve. Coffee and ice cream are never far away.

THE LONG TRAIL, KU-RING-GAI CHASE

10.4km | Intermediate | Bushland, rock art, sea eagles.

The right length and the right challenge for a Sunday. The Long Trail curves through the bushland of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, where on a sunny morning you'll spot lace monitors scrambling up scribbly gums and native wildflowers going off. Stop in the right places and you'll find Indigenous rock engravings of sharks, dingoes, shields and wallabies. Expect flats, ups and downs along the gravel, then the view at Cowan's Creek, and "creek" is an understatement. After taking in the water far below, look up for White-bellied Sea Eagles working the sky.

NORTH HEAD, MANLY

12km | Intermediate | One hill, the best view in Sydney.

Start at Queenscliff Lagoon Reserve and run the length of North Steyne with the surf on your left and the Norfolk pines going past. Through Manly, then the ride turns serious at Darley Road, a steep, sustained climb that separates the e-bikes from the excuses. At the top it opens out: St Patrick's Estate, North Fort, and the bush trails of North Head Sanctuary, with lookouts over the ocean, the harbour and the city skyline stacked up behind it. Drop down to Q Station for a coffee before you roll back into Mantown. Two hours if you stop properly, and you should.
