Kids bring life to a kitchen, along with the occasional crayon, sticky fingerprint and baking catastrophe. Most of that chaos can be designed out before it starts. Collaroy Kitchen Centre shares eight design moves that make the hardest-working room in the house more family-friendly without making it any less beautiful.

ROUNDED EDGES

Plenty of adults can still name the exact bench corner they collided with as a child. Softening those edges is the simplest safety call in a kitchen, and one that has to be made before anything is fabricated. Curved benchtops and rounded island ends are gentler on small heads and hurrying hips.

APPLIANCES OUT OF REACH

You can spend a decade explaining why forks and toasters don't mix, or you can put the toaster somewhere small hands can't reach. A walk-in pantry or a lift-up appliance cupboard settles it for good, clears the bench and stops the cords trailing where they shouldn't be.

DURABLE MATERIALS

Half the goal is protecting kids from the kitchen; the other half is protecting the kitchen from the kids. Porcelain and sintered stone shrug off stains, scratches and hot pans, and natural granite takes decades of family traffic without flinching. Hardwood accents add warmth where hands land.

VARIED COUNTER HEIGHTS

Child-proofing is usually about keeping small people out. The better question is how to bring them in safely, and varied bench heights are the place to start. While Mum or Dad chops apples at the main counter, the little one kneads dough at a lower bench, well clear of the sharp things.

MIRRORED SPLASHBACKS

Spaghetti night need not leave a lasting mark, and when it comes to splashbacks, the less grout there is, the better. A mirrored panel wipes clean in a single pass, bounces light back into the room and gives parents eyes in the back of their head, even with their back to the room.

THE DROP & HOMEWORK ZONE

A dedicated landing spot teaches kids to return lunchboxes to the same place, so nobody's hunting for one ten minutes before the bell. Stock it with fruit, snacks, bread and jam and they'll soon pack their own. Add a homework nook alongside, and hooks for the school bags.

LOCKABLE DRAWERS

Child-proofing added later always looks like it was added later, all bungee cords through handles and plastic latches stuck to good cabinetry. Locks specified from the outset disappear into the design, keeping knives, china and forbidden treats out of reach without ever showing their hand.

FAMILY NOTICEBOARDS

Calendars, chore rosters, grocery lists, permission slips: scraps of paper magnetised to the fridge stopped coping years ago. Chalkboard or whiteboard paint turns a pantry door or a whole wall into a canvas where parents write, kids draw and everyone sees what's coming up.
